Secretary Salazar told the Supreme Court to dump the Joshua Tree garbage dump!

Great news for Joshua Tree!

Thanks to you, and the more than 95,000 citizens who signed our petition asking Secretary Salazar to protect Joshua Tree from the Eagle Mountain landfill, the Department of Interior has reversed their position of more than two decades, and opposed developer Kaiser Venture’s petition to the U.S. Supreme Court.

This decision substantially weakens the developer’s case, and will hopefully persuade the Supreme Court to reject the case — leaving in place the lower court rulings that block the proposal to put the nation’s largest landfill next-door to Joshua Tree.

Your pressure played a huge role in making this possible.

“I wanted to pass on this note I received from Donna and Larry Charpied, who led the fight against the Eagle Mountain landfill, literally buying a book in 1992 to learn how take the developers to court.

The outcome of the alerts resulted in the Government filing an opposition brief to Kaiser! Truly remarkable.

We have fought this ill conceived plan since 1987. After nearly 24 years, this is the first time the government opposed this project in any way, shape, or form.

We are so grateful for you sending out this action alert and for everyone who signed the letter. We think since the gov’t didn’t go along with the polluters, their case will be trashed (pun intended).

Thank you again. I cannot tell you how much the Desert and Joshua Tree National Park appreciate your efforts!

In Solidarity,
Donna & Larry”
